Measuring Organizational Effectiveness
A comprehensive framework for evaluating corporate-effectiveness across industries, grounded in Druckerian principles of purposeful management and measurable outcomes.

What Makes an Organization Effective?
For Peter F. Drucker, effectiveness was fundamental. Organizations exist to accomplish something, and management’s responsibility is to turn purpose into performance and intentions into results.
As Drucker wrote in Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices:
“Efficiency is concerned with doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things.”
For more than a decade, the Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University has explored what organizational effectiveness looks like in practice and how it can be understood through evidence. Our research examines organizational performance across five dimensions: Customer Satisfaction, Employee Satisfaction, Engagement and Development, Innovation, Social Responsibility, and Financial Strength. Together, these dimensions provide a way to look beyond any single measure of performance and consider the organization as a whole.
Measuring What Matters
Drucker believed organizations should be judged by results, not intentions or activity alone. That idea is at the heart of the Institute’s work on organizational effectiveness. Since 2013, the Drucker Institute has developed a research framework that brings together multiple sources of data to examine the performance of large publicly traded companies. This work has produced more than a decade of data and research into organizational performance. Our annual rankings are one expression of this work. The larger purpose is to deepen our understanding of what makes organizations effective and what leaders can learn from the evidence.
An Ongoing Field of Inquiry
Organizational effectiveness is not a single score or a single year’s ranking. It raises larger questions. How is effectiveness created and sustained? How do different dimensions of performance relate to one another? How does effectiveness change over time? What can leaders learn from organizations and their trajectories? The Drucker Institute continues to develop its research, deepen its understanding of organizational performance, and explore new ways to make this work useful to leaders, scholars, and organizations.
